Women planning now for 2029 elections – Tipp women seek more influence

Share

Currently, just 12 of Tipperary County Council’s 40 councillors are female, reflecting the gender imbalance in political representation around the country. An event held in Thurles on May 15 by the organisation See Her Elected (SHE) is part of a national campaign to improve representation.
Organised by Tipperary Public Participation Network (PPN) and See Her Elected (SHE), with support from Tipperary County Council, the event highlighted how women can influence change in their communities – not just by standing for election, but also through volunteering, advocacy and public participation.

See Her Elected (SHE) is a feminist, community-led, rural initiative to support women in political life who value inclusivity, human rights and equality. It began in Longford under Longford Women’s Link and has a presence in every county since the 2024 General Election. It is funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

SHE employs three staff to provide guidance, political education and workshops. This work is to build confidence, share knowledge and show women that their voices, experiences and perspectives belong at every decision-making table.

In Tipperary, attendees heard from women involved in community development, advocacy, environmentalism and public life.
As Michelle Maher, SHE manager, said, “Many women are already leading every day in their communities, through volunteering, advocacy, organising and supporting others, but they may not always recognise that as leadership.
“We need more women from all backgrounds involved in shaping the future of our communities and local government,” she said.
Tipperary PPN co-ordinator, Ruth Smith, praised SHE for helping people to “learn the ropes, learn the structures, and think ‘Well, do I want to go further?’ We need everybody to believe that they can be empowered enough to step up.”
Pointing to SHE’s Guide to Running in the 2029 Local Elections, Ruth hailed it as “a vital publication”.
“Information is power and this guide oozes us taking our power if we choose to do it. Even if you’re vaguely considering stepping into politics, read it,” she said.
Hilary Dilworth, South Tipperary Development Company, said, “The big thing for women to think about is to lean into leadership positions, whether that’s leadership with a capital L or a small l.”
Cllr Pamela Quirke O’Meara (non-party), said, “We’re lucky in Tipperary with the numbers of women that we have representing us, but it’s important to keep those women involved, and support them, and bring more people along to enter the local politics scene. And keep the voices of women and mothers heard, so that we have representation for all women in society.”
Cllr Kay Cahill Skehan (Fianna Fáil), said, “It was just wonderful to hear all the women talk, and all that they’re doing, and how effective women’s role is within the community”.
