Aontas advocates and lobbies for quality education for all adults across the island of Ireland and raises awareness of the impact of adult learning on people’s lives and on society. Community education often helps people who have been let down by the traditional education system in Ireland.
An Cosán began in Tallaght, Dublin, in 1986 and grew to become a national community education provider offering courses in person, online and in blended formats. It works in collaboration with over 240 community organisations and the courses are designed to benefit people personally and professionally.
ACE in UCC has been offering part-time education programmes to Cork, Munster, and beyond since 1946. It runs part-time certificate, diploma, and degree (Level 6–9) courses for adult learners.
NALA provides free courses on literacy, numeracy, and technology; you can call them at 1800 20 20 65.
There are a wide variety of climate-action courses available, from community-based workshops to certificate courses and postgraduate degrees. Two examples delivered online, yet at community level:
(a) Local Education & Training Boards provide free 4-week online courses focusing on biodiversity, energy, and waste for community groups.
(b) The unique Cloughjordan Eco-Village in Co. Tipperary teaches Community Resilience and other courses in person and online.
The Community Employment Early Learning and Care Programme supports people who want a career in Early Learning and Care (previously childcare). It offers training, work experience and the opportunity to earn qualifications on early years courses.
