Galway Rural Development (GRD) are among the largest Rural Social Scheme (RSS) operators in the country with a quota of 220 places for farmers (or their family members acting as the participant). Steve Dolan, CEO Galway Rural Development writes:

A pilot programme held in Birr, Co Offaly last year developed innovative ways of encouraging young people to get outdoors, on what became a journey of self-discovery. The good news is, FLOW is back with a new course about to begin this November.

Three local development company representatives welcomed the announcement of a new Community Connection Project which will employ 30 community link workers countrywide. Notably, the new community workers will have a communications role.

Poverty, in particular child poverty, was a  recurring theme this year in the various budget submissions compiled by community and voluntary organisations.  

A new programme was launched last week aimed at enhancing the performance of organisations supported under the Community Services Programme (CSP). 

A joint showcase of the Community Development Programme (CDP) and the Empowering Community Programme (ECP) in Athlone on September 23 highlighted the impressive work that is being carried out on the ground in communities around Ireland. 

Changing Ireland rocked up to Banagher, Co Offaly, and crossed the bridge to the Galway side to interview Brendan O’Loughlin at his Shannonside home. He has just retired as CEO of Offaly Local Development Company and is the first person to feature in our Wise Heads Pilot Podcast series.
