Pride in the community – take 4: Longford, Monaghan, Carlow and Limerick

Share

Once the preserve of larger and more traditionally liberal centres, Pride is now celebrated right throughout Ireland, something that is evident this summer. Here we look community-organised events in two towns and one city outside Dublin for this year’s Pride celebrations.

Monaghan town to hold its first ever Pride

For the first time ever Pride is being celebrated in Monaghan Town on July 25 and 26th.

It will begin with Family Pride Day on the 25th at Monaghan Courthouse. A safe and sober event is promised and the MC will be Eddie McGuinness, who established The Outing Festival in Co Clare. There will also be circus performers, face painting, live music and artist stalls on the day.

On the 26th at 12pm a ‘Walk With Pride’ will take place, starting at Monaghan Peace Campus.

In a message on social media, Monaghan Pride said it is important to have a visible LGBT+ presence outside cities:

“At its heart Pride is about making sure that everyone in our community – our sons, daughters, neighbours and friends – know they belong exactly as they are.

“In rural towns its easy for LGBT+ people to feel isolated or like they have to move away to find community. Pride is simply our way of showing them they don’t have to look far to find safety, love and support. It’s about bringing people together under the sun,” said the message.

Eddie McGuinness will be MC when Pride takes place in Monaghan Town on July 25 and 26th.

Limerick city’s theme is ‘Pride in our Community’

A very full Pride programme is happening in Limerick city between July 6-11 and the theme is ‘Pride in our Community’.

Festival director Lisa Daly said, “’Pride in our Community’ isn’t just a slogan. It’s about those before us who paved the way, the volunteers, the organisations, the small groups, clubs, the allies who show up for us. It’s about celebrating how far we’ve come together.”

The city will host a number of parties over the week, including ‘Gowl Haus’ at the Pharmacia pub on Monday, and ‘Climax Party’ in Dolan’s pub on Saturday.

There will also be comedy, drag, classes, a book club, a community café, a crafting night and even a golfing event called ‘Putt In Pride’. The University of Limerick is providing Pride Village accommodation from July 9 to 11, for those travelling to the festival.

Limerick Pride are taking an anti-AI stance advocating for the support of queer artists, which aligns with its 2026 theme of ‘Pride in our Community’, supporting community over corporations.

Pride in Longford still seeking stallholders and artists

Longford Pride volunteers in St Patrick’s Day Parade this year.

Pride is also coming to Longford from August 3-9.

Among the highlights will be the Longford Pride Craft Market on August 8. Stallholders are being sought and it is an opportunity for anyone who creates anything handmade to share their work while celebrating Pride. LGBT+ creators are especially welcome to apply.

There will also be an art exhibition on the theme ‘My Body, My Self’, which will run at Longford Library for the duration of the local Pride event. An open call has been put out for artist submissions for the exhibition.

Anyone interested in taking a stall or submitting their artwork should get in touch by email on: lorelei.longfordpride@gmail.com.

Carlow Pride running since 2019 and produces own magazine

Thanks (from Ed) to Carlow Pride for the main photo used to head up this story. This year sees volunteers in Carlow organise their 7th annual series of Pride events. They also publish a fabulous magazine annually called ‘Out Mag’. It contains plenty of interesting articles, views and colour – check it out here: https://carlowpridefest.ie/theoutmag/
